About Me

I am a pastor’s wife and retired Christian school teacher. After teaching elementary and middle school classes for many years, the Lord combined my teaching experience with my love of art, and I had the joy of teaching studio art and art history with a Christian emphasis to kindergartners through high school seniors for many years. I have also taught Christian history to all ages, including adults. This perspective adds to my thoughts about art through the ages. In addition, I am a writer, with articles and devotionals in adult and children’s publications.

I grew up in Maine right on the coast, and I love the beach. When the fall storms came I loved to stand on the rocks and watch giant waves roll in to crash over the rocks and send spray high into the air. The American artist, Winslow Homer, also loved the ocean, and he spent many years painting it from his studio in the town where I grew up. When I see Homer’s paintings I can still hear the roar of the waves and recognize many of the places I love.

After living in Oklahoma and Texas for the last ten years we have moved to Colorado and are now enjoying sunsets over the Rockies. I continue to write, teach, and speak about art, writing, and Christian history. Here’s a link to my website, if you’d like to see the workshops and other presentations I do.  http://www.kathy-oneill.com

Kathy, Congratulations!! This is so interesting. We finally toured Winslow Homer’s Studio last week end, although I had been there in the 60’s. If you are in Maine I would love to take you there. CWB

Hi Kathy, I am Mary Abele and I am a middle school teacher for a homeschool co-op. I would love to use your blog as a foundation for an art appreciation class. Would that be OK with you?

Hi Mary, I am honored that you would like to use these posts in your home school co-op! Can you tell me a little about the co-op and how you see using the materials? What age children, etc. I now live in southern Colorado, which isn’t probably near you, but I’d be glad to help you in any way you need via skype or regular email. Perhaps you’d like help with planning lessons beyond those I have posted on. I have taught art, art history, and Christian history to private groups of all ages and will soon have a website up and running for people to book workshops and presentations in person and possibly by skype.

Oh, my goodness!! That would be fantastic. We are Veritas https://www.veritasclasses.org/ I am currently teaching middle school Apologia Physical Science.
I would have 45 min. a week to teach the students. We attend from September to May. I imagined I would separate each lesson into two parts, week 1 would be the information instruction and then follow up the next week with the hands-on instruction.
I would really like to teach this class because I love art. It speaks many different aspects to us and allows us to see so much of the human story.
The information you share really gives us golden nuggets that bring the art to life.
My next step is to present this class consideration to Veritas. It will likely be accepted and would start next fall.
My class size would be determined by the amount of interest by the parents and students.
Thank you for allowing me to use your material.
    Mary 🙂

      Hi Mary,
Thanks for the link to Veritas. It was very helpful to find out more about your home school co op.
I’d like to give this a bit more thought before we go forward. Is there a way to contact you more privately through Veritas, since the blog is public and my website is not up and running quite yet?

        Hi Mary,
If I email you through Veritas will you get it? If not I should be launching my website after Christmas and there’ll be a link to it on my blog and that will provide a more private venue to discuss how to go forward with your idea.
I hope you have a blessed Christmas also!

Thank you, Marylou! I enjoyed talking with you, also, and I’m so glad you visited my blog. Growing up in the Northeast as we both did, we know how important a warm hat and mittens are!! I hope we can stay in touch!

Thank you, Gail! I’m so glad you like my posts. I just visited your Author visit page, and I enjoyed several of your interviews and subscribed. I love hearing about good books to read, including yours. The Women of the Heartland series sounds wonderful.
